Air India Revises Fuel Surcharge on Domestic and International Flights from April 08

Air India has revised its fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, effective from April 8, 2026, with some long-haul international routes seeing changes from April 10, 2026. This update comes amidst fluctuating global jet fuel prices and will impact ticket prices for travelers.

Air India Introduces Distance-Based Fuel Surcharge for Domestic Flights

From April 8, 2026 (0901 hrs IST), Air India will implement a new distance-based fuel surcharge for domestic routes, replacing the previous flat rate. This change aligns with the government’s decision to cap Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price increases at 25%. The revised charges apply to all flights operated by Air India and Air India Express.

Here’s the breakdown of the fuel surcharge per passenger, per flight segment:

For distances of 0–500 km, the fuel surcharge is ₹299. For 501–1000 km, it’s ₹399. Flights covering 1001–1500 km will have a ₹549 surcharge. For 1501–2000 km, it increases to ₹749, and for distances over 2000 km, the surcharge is ₹899.

This new structure means shorter domestic flights will incur smaller fuel charge increases, while longer routes may see slightly higher charges.

International Flight Fuel Surcharges Rise Due to Soaring Global Jet Fuel Prices

Global fuel prices have seen a sharp increase recently. Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that the average jet fuel price almost doubled from USD 99.40 per barrel in February to USD 195.19 by late March 2026. A significant jump in refinery margins, also known as the crack spread, has further contributed to this rise.

Air India has stated that even with the updated surcharges, the airline is still absorbing a portion of the increased fuel costs, as the new rates do not fully cover the spike.

Air India International Fuel Surcharge by Region

Here’s a breakdown of the new international fuel surcharges:

Effective April 8, 2026 (0901 hrs IST):

  • SAARC (excluding Bangladesh): USD 24
  • Middle East / West Asia: USD 50
  • China & Southeast Asia (excluding Singapore): USD 100
  • Singapore: USD 60
  • Africa: USD 130

Effective April 10, 2026 (0001 hrs IST):

  • Europe (including UK): USD 205
  • North America: USD 280
  • Australia: USD 280

Updates regarding fuel surcharges for flights to Bangladesh, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea will be announced at a later date, pending regulatory approvals.

Key Information for Air India Passengers

Travelers should note that flight tickets purchased before these new surcharges come into effect will not be impacted. However, any changes to travel dates or itineraries that require a fare recalculation may result in the application of the updated fuel surcharge.

Air India has also stated that fuel surcharges will undergo regular reviews, adjusting based on global fuel price fluctuations.

Global Trend: Other Airlines Also Raising Fuel Surcharges

Air India’s decision to increase fuel surcharges is part of a broader global trend. Many airlines worldwide are raising these additional charges on tickets due to the sharp increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, partly influenced by geopolitical tensions such as the Iran–Israel conflict.

Reportedly, jet fuel prices have surged by over 100% in a short span, climbing from approximately $2.20 per gallon to nearly $4.50 per gallon.

Beyond Air India, numerous other global airlines have already implemented increased fuel surcharges to counter rising operational costs, including:

  • Cathay Pacific
  • Air France–KLM
  • Air New Zealand
  • Hong Kong Airlines
  • Greater Bay Airlines
  • AirAsia
  • Thai Airways
  • Qantas
  • Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)
  • Korean Air
  • IndiGo
  • Akasa Air
  • Spring Airlines
  • SunExpress
  • Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)
  • Virgin Australia

Impact on Travelers: What to Expect from Air India’s Fuel Surcharge Update

While fuel surcharges are a standard component of airline ticket pricing, significant adjustments often signal volatility in global oil markets. For travelers, these revisions by Air India mean potentially higher ticket prices, particularly for longer international flights.

If you are planning upcoming travel, considering booking your flights sooner rather than later could help mitigate the impact of further fare increases, should fuel prices continue their upward trend.
