Mozambique ETA Reinstated for Visa-Exempt Travellers
Mozambique has reinstated its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement, effective July 31, 2026. After resolving months of technical issues, the ETA is once again mandatory for travellers from 29 visa-exempt countries. Eligible visitors must secure an ETA before boarding flights to Mozambique.
The ETA was initially introduced in April 2025 but was suspended weeks later due to problems with the online application portal. Authorities confirm that the upgraded system is now fully operational, ensuring a smooth application process for all.
Who Needs the Mozambique ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is specifically for citizens of 29 countries who previously enjoyed visa-free entry for short business and tourism visits. These countries include travellers from:
- Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom
- Canada and the United States
- China, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates
- Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal
While these travellers do not require a traditional visa, they must obtain an ETA a minimum of 48 hours before their scheduled departure to Mozambique.
Mozambique ETA vs. eVisa: Key Differences
Mozambique utilizes both an ETA and an eVisa system, accessible through a single online portal. Understanding the distinction is crucial for travellers:
- ETA: For travellers from the 29 visa-exempt countries. It is valid for one entry and a stay of up to 30 days. The cost is approximately US$48.
- eVisa: Required for travellers from all other countries, including India. Depending on the visa type, this allows for stays of 30 to 90 days.
This dual system aligns with a growing international trend, where countries maintain visa-free access while implementing digital pre-travel checks to enhance border security and screening processes.
Mozambique’s Advanced Digital Visa Platform
Mozambique launched a new cloud-based visa platform in February 2026. Developed with technical support from VFS Global, this system replaces the previous one that caused the ETA suspension, ensuring greater stability and efficiency.
Key features of the new platform include:
- A unified portal for both ETA and eVisa applications.
- Accessibility for travellers from 183 countries worldwide.
- Support for multiple visa categories, such as tourist, business, crew, sports, humanitarian, and oil and gas travel.
- Digital processing directly linked to travellers’ passports for streamlined entry.
Important Travel Information for Mozambique
Before planning your trip to Mozambique, all travellers should be aware of these essential requirements:
- ETA applications must be submitted a minimum of 48 hours before your departure.
- ETA holders are permitted a stay of up to 30 days on a single entry.
- Travellers intending to stay longer than 30 days must apply for the appropriate eVisa.
- Arriving in Mozambique without the mandatory ETA or eVisa may result in denied entry into the country.
Mozambique Travel Requirements for Indian Citizens
It is important for Indian passport holders to note that they are not eligible for Mozambique’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Indian citizens must continue to apply for a Mozambique eVisa through the country’s new digital platform prior to their travel.
For Indian travellers departing from major hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, or Chennai, the process remains unchanged. An approved eVisa is still a mandatory requirement before departure, and airlines will verify this travel authorization prior to boarding.
